Staying Independent with a Little Help: from 03/03/2026

Hello!!

You don’t have to do it all alone.

Living at home safely and comfortably as you age is important.  It’s something you have worked hard for, and it’s natural to want to do as much as you can on your own. But staying independent doesn’t mean doing everything alone.  Sometimes it means letting your adult children or caregivers lend a hand.

Accepting help doesn’t mean you’re giving up your independence, it means staying safe, strong, and able to enjoy your life at home. Your adult children, friends, or caregivers aren’t trying to take over, they want to make sure you’re safe, comfortable, and able to enjoy each day.

Even small things – like someone helping you get dressed, reach something on a high shelf or down low, feed your pets, walk around the house, or negotiate stairs – can make a big difference.  Listening to their ideas can help you avoid falls, save energy, and make everyday tasks easier.

You know your body and your routines best, but sometimes an outside perspective can offer ideas you hadn’t considered.  For example, a simple change in furniture placement, adding a small handrail, or adjusting how to do daily tasks can make life much easier without taking away your independence. And, it’s still walking if you use a walker!  You can still shower using a shower chair and a hand-help wand!  You can still use the bathroom with a bedside commode!  These things make you more independent!!  These helpers can prevent falls and give you more energy for the activities you love.

Accepting support doesn’t mean you’re weak or dependent, it’s a way to protect yourself and maintain your independence for the long term.  It can also give your loved one’s peace of mind, knowing you’re safe while still respecting your choices.

Remember:  Accepting help is NOT giving up control, it’s a tool to stay independent, safe, and comfortable at home.  You deserve support, care, and peace of mind, and letting others assist is a way to protect all of those things.
